As a painter and printmaker the main criteria I look for are Frontality, Edges, Scale and Mark making.  The purpose is to create a space that can’t be known and might challenge logic. 

This can take a formal approach, such as ‘What is the bare minimum that can be placed in the space to engage the eye?’ At other times, an emotional less considered approach is taken, the mark making to lead, but constantly stepping back to the whole.
