Cathy Lewis uses the human form as the basis with which to explore and question ideas linked to social stereotyping. By cross-referencing various figures and gestures drawn from a wide array of cultural references, her sculptures are marked by a fastidious attention to detail and have an unsettling presence.
“The recurring themes that run through my work are concerned with a sense of belonging, displacement, community, conformity and the place of the individual within the constraints of society.

Work by Cathy Lewis
I often link several ideas in one piece. So a particular work often has layers of ideas, each having a bearing on the final outcome of the piece.
Without the work merely illustrating one thought, I try to evoke a duality of feeling in the viewer. Some of the work may appear light hearted, but on further inspection have a darker side, or vice-versa, it may appear dark and have a lighter side.
I have wide-ranging influences in my work from Vermeer to theatre, genetics, animal behaviour, children's toys and film. I want the work to make a strong visual impact. Which will remain with the viewer.
Once a piece has been created I hope that the audience can take their own thoughts from it. I want it to be open to interpretation. For me fine art is about asking questions, which open up thought and debate.
