Spring is in the air and we’re offering some exciting workshops to put a spring in your step. We’ll be continuing our life drawing classes, open print course, ceramics workshops and much more besides. Whether you’re a beginner and want to try things out, or would like to develop your skills further, our artist-tutors will inspire and guide you through a range of creative and technical processes.

Open Printmaking Course
May 8, 15, 22, 29 & June 5, 12 – Wednesdays 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Artist/tutor: Dawn Brooks
Members £78 / non-members £90 / single sessions £16

Develop your skills using intaglio techniques including drypoint etching, chine collé,non-toxic etching, collagraph and carborundum printing. Learn more about intaglio printing, printmaking materials and using a printing press. You’ll produce a series of prints in stages over the duration of the course. Bring a sketchbook for ideas and any existing printing plates you’d like to develop. Consumable materials are provided, except for new copper or zinc plates, which are available for purchase at cost price. Enrol for all six sessions to get the most out of this season of print. Please note there are no discounts on fees for single sessions.

Ceramic Sculpture Course
March 26 & April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 – Tuesdays 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Artist/tutor: Charlotte Salt
Members  £78 / non-members £90 (all six sessions)

Develop hand building techniques with clay whilst exploring your own creative ideas. Charlotte will demonstrate pinch pot, coil building, slab techniques and using glazes – all of which can be combined in one piece of work. Whether you want to experiment, be decorative and/or functional, you’ll learn new skills in a nurturing environment, working at your own pace. You’ll definitely have something to show by the end of the course. Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty – bring your own apron and a small hand towel. The course fee for six weeks includes clay / all materials and two kiln firings (bisque/glaze).

Life Drawing from the Nude
Sunday 28 April, 10.00am – 4.00pm

A full day session of life drawing which will allow for longer poses and more concentrated work on drawings. Whether your approach is purely observational or you prefer a freer, expressive form of drawing this workshop will provide an opportunity to improve your drawing skills. Materials are provided.

Screen Printing
Sunday 5 May, 10.00am – 4.00pm
Artist/tutor: Justin DL
Members £30 / non-members £40

Justin will introduce you to the colourful medium of screen printing using various stencil processes, including photographic stencils, to produce multi-colour prints and developing an image working from your original material. You will learn the basics of screen printing with an opportunity to explore the versatility of the medium. All are welcome, from beginners to those with some experience. Bring photographs or sketches to work from (print or digital). 

Printmaking: Hard Ground Etching
Saturday 11 May, 10.00am – 4.00pm
Artist/tutor: Dawn Brooks
Members £30 / non-members £40

This technique produces a crisp, clean line quality and is a must for people that draw and enjoy line work. The process begins by coating a metal plate with an acrylic resist which you draw into to expose lines. The plate is then submerged in a copper sulphate solution, which etches the line ready to ink up and print. No prior experience is required.

Cyanotype Printing – Plastics Recycle
Saturday 18 May, 10.00am – 4.00pm

The cyanotype process dates back to the birth of photography and on this workshop you will learn how to make your own stunning deep blue prints. Create designs on an environmental theme with waste plastic objects and any materials that can be recycled. Bring discarded plastic materials of all kinds to use in the workshop.

Printmaking: Soft Ground Etching
Saturday 25 May, 10.00am – 4.00pm

Members £30 / non-members £40

Soft ground etching produces a print that looks like a drawing, with a different quality to hard ground etching. The process involves coating a metal plate with a soft wax ground and then transferring a drawing through paper into the ground. The plate is etched in copper sulphate, ready to ink up and print. No previous experience is required. 

Workshop Information
There are limited places on each workshop, usually a maximum of 8, so book early to avoid disappointment. All workshops are for adults 18 years and over and all materials are included unless otherwise indicated.
