Crescent Arts, Studio, 2018

Our studios are located in an historic building also home to Scarborough Art Gallery. We offer studio space for up to seven artists at any one time with opportunities for artistic research, discovery, experimentation and production in a critically engaged environment. Studio opportunities are advertised as they become available and artists are invited to apply for studio occupancy for up to three years with individual professional guidance to support development of work, funding applications, access to networks and more.

Studio artists are also offered opportunities to present work in the gallery space at Crescent Arts, and further afield, for which they receive modest financial support. The exhibition space at Crescent provides a supportive and discursive environment to exhibit new work, and challenge the boundaries of contemporary art practice.

Professional development is a key factor and artists are encouraged to work strategically to promote their practice beyond the studio; whether this is through exhibitions, off-site projects, presentations, educational activities or cultural exchange. Artists are invited to contribute to the running of the gallery, studios and workshop programme by providing services in these areas for appropriate remuneration. Studio artists are encouraged to share their skills and experience and frequently organise group projects and exhibitions. Prospective studio holders are considered in terms of their ability to contribute to collaborative ventures and, of course, for the potential of individual work.

We are keen to work with artists whose practice is innovative, challenging and critically engaged, and who would benefit most from the facilities and support that we can provide.

Recent projects include The Wild with Emma Rushton and Derek Tyman 2010, Anniversary with Monica Ross 2011, The Art Party Conference 2013 with Bob and Roberta Smith and co-commissioning Prospect Refuge Hazard, new work by Helen Sear at Dalby Forest 2018, following curation of her work for Venice Biennale 2015.

Crescent Arts is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications for studio occupancy from artists of all backgrounds and from all sections of the community. Please note that resident studio artists are required to undergo CRB/DBS checks prior to working with children or vulnerable adults.
