Our next exhibition at Woodend Gallery, “Looking Inward, Looking Onward,” offers a moment of reflection — a micro-portrait of Crescent Arts as it stands today. Bringing together works by artists who have shaped, supported, and been shaped by the organisation over the years, the exhibition celebrates the creative community that continues to define Crescent Arts.

Alongside contemporary works, visitors will find an interview with a former Crescent Arts member and a look back at some of the memorable exhibitions that have taken place at Woodend in recent years. The show also features selected materials from the Crescent Arts archive — posters, photographs, and artefacts that trace the organisation’s journey since its founding in 1979.

More than a look back, “Looking Inward, Looking Onward” is also an open invitation: to get involved, to share memories, and to help us make sense of nearly five decades of art and collaboration. As we approach Crescent Arts’ 50th anniversary in 2029, we’re beginning to piece together our story — one built by and for artists, deeply rooted in Scarborough’s creative community.

Founded as Yorkshire’s first artist studio co-operative, Crescent Arts has long provided space for artists to work, exhibit, and connect. This exhibition celebrates that enduring spirit — one that continues to look inward with reflection and outward with ambition.
