Session 1 | Congo Shorts

11.30am – 1pm
Suitable for 16+

This screening features a series of short films which showcase contemporary congolese voices via animation, music and documentary. It thinks about the role of such films as examples of contemporary archives and how sites such as YouTube can act as a space for the circulation of knowledge.

After the screening we will host a Q&A with Furaha Muss, a community activist passionate about social justice, grassroots change and using creative means to promote peace. Pascal Mirndi, a 23 year old student and activist within Extinction Rebellion, University of Goma, and a member of the LUCHA, a Congolese citizens’ movement, will join the Q&A via video call.

Session 2 | Colonial Archives // Moving Image

2pm – 4pm
Scarborough Art Gallery
Suitable for 16+

Film run time: 60 minutes
Q&A session: 30 minutes

This screening will think about how moving image artists have used archives to think with and about our pasts in order to consider present and future happenings. We will be joined by artist/filmmaker Hope Strickland who will be screening two of their films and artist and researcher Errol Francis for a post-screening Q&A.

Some films contain flashing imagery and some content that viewers may find triggering.

Join us for a screening of classic film Citizen Kane, which tells the story of the investigation of a publishing tycoon’s dying words reveals conflicting stories about his scandalous life.
