A look into our gardening day // Growth Project
Come see what we got up to Saturday 5th July at our Open Garden Day
The raised beds sit behind Woodend Creative workspace and gallery. We started working with community groups a few years ago which have resulted in exhibitions such as ‘dear plants…’ and then a year later ‘Grounded’. This year we want to continue our conversations in the garden with the wider public.
We ensured we had plenty of snacks and drinks for people as it was a very warm day in the garden – As it faces South the garden is lucky enough to have sun throughout the day. We have found this affects how we plant and we are still experimenting with lots of different seeds to see what grows best.

Radish are an excellent plant for our beds as we will get a few harvests of it this year-despite our late growing schedule!
We have been very lucky to have strawberries come back each year-some for us, and some for the birds. There is a small space within the leaves where we have planted spinach-perfect for summer salads.

Did you know that marigolds are a great for repelling pests? We don’t use any pesticides in our garden so whilst planting carrots seeds, we added marigold flowers to help keep away the aphids and carrot flies.

We were lucky enough to be joined by Sam Mckie for some live music whilst we enjoyed the afternoon.
Sam McKie hails from the chalky cliffs of East Yorkshire. Drawing on poetry, trad folk, Americana and nature, he tries to create songs that speak of the flow both good and sad. Inspired by and playing songs from likes of Laura Marling, Ben Howard and Johnny Flynn writing on the guitar, banjo and keys he attempts a modern take on the old folk style.

If you didn’t manage to join us we have more events coming up for the summer.
Dates for your diary;

Keep an eye out for some lovely zines and bookmarks that we have managed to get printed thanks to the founders of this project Two Ridings Community Foundation.
